Laminate Flooring: A How-To Guide

Multi-Surface Finish and Cleaner on wood table

We have thousands of consumers who love using Quick Shine® Multi-Surface Floor Finish to beautify their laminate floors giving it a deep, rich, protective glow.  Today we are going to discuss how to finish, maintain, and protect your laminate flooring to keep them gorgeous for years to come!

Laminates are generally composed of four layers.  The top layer is a protective vinyl coating that is applied over a layer that contains the wood floor substance or image.  This vinyl coating is why you should never ‘sand, wax or lacquer’ your laminate floor.  Also, never flood-coat your laminate surface with water.  Laminate floors are glued or snap-locked into place and water should not be allowed to penetrate under the laminate.  Since the protective layer is composed of vinyl, Quick Shine® Multi-Surface Floor Finish is a marvelous way to pick up the shine and to protect the vinyl/laminate.

It is important to apply Quick Shine® Multi-Surface Floor Finish to a clean, dry surface.  We recommend cleaning the laminate surface first with a tap-water-dampened microfiber pad or, for a more thorough clean, use our Quick Shine® Multi-Surface Floor Cleaner.  Never flood-coat the floor with water during the cleaning process.  Also, avoid cleaning with oil soap, pine oil, orange oil, ammonia, vinegar, or any other all-purpose cleaners as these cleaners can interfere with the film formation process of our Floor Finish by leaving sticky oily residue, detergent haze, or an inadequate surface for maximum gloss.  Many general-purpose and floor-cleaning brands look acceptable when they are wet, but when dry create footprinting and haze issues due to residue that is left on the floor.

In addition, you can freshen the shine whenever you feel it is necessary by simply applying a new coat of Floor Finish.  As a general rule of thumb, heavy traffic floors should be freshened with a new coat every 2-3 months, and light traffic areas every 4-6 months.  You can even freshen just the high-traffic areas of the floor if you wish.

We hope these tips will help you with caring for your laminate flooring.  If you should have any further questions, please feel free to call our Customer Service M-F at 1-800-255-1891 from 8 am-4:30 pm EST.

Hi Pamela! To remove any imperfections or to remove the Floor Finish from the entire floor surface, we recommend using Quick Shine Deep Cleaner. The Deep Cleaner was specifically developed to not only deep clean, but also to safely remove our finish in situations such as yours. After you correct the imperfections, once the floor is dry you can apply a coat of Floor Finish to your clean, dry floor to give it a beautiful shine! If you have additional questions, please feel free to call our Customer Service M-F at 1-800-255-1891 from 8am-4:30pm EST. We are always happy to help!

Thanks for the tips on taking care of laminate floors. My wife and I are having laminate put in this summer, and we want to make sure it stays in good shape. I like that you mentioned using rugs in the main areas of your home so that it reduces foot traffic on the wood. We will be sure to do that!

What are steps/products to use on high gloss hardwood floors that have a polyurethane finish? Which of your products should I use and in what order?

      Hi Gregory,

We recommend routine cleaning with Quick Shine Multi-Surface or Hardwood Floor Cleaner. These pH neutral cleaners will not leave behind sticky, dulling residue and are safe for any hardwood floor. If your floors are lacking their original luster, we recommend following your cleaning with Quick Shine Multi-Surface Finish or Hardwood Luster to add a protective shine to your floors. This is what will give your floors the WOW Factor!

      Hi James,
We do not recommend using Murphy Oil Soap as it leaves behind surfactant which could effect the way our product performs. For best results, we recommend cleaning with Quick Shine Multi-Surface Floor Cleaner as it is compatible.
